Years ago, before I fully understood what she meant, my Grandma Williams would tell me something simple but powerful: “You have to sit and be still to hear our Father.
At the time, I didn’t always grasp the depth of those words. Life felt loud. Busy. Complicated. I was young, learning, trying to navigate emotions and situations that felt bigger than me. But she would say it calmly, like it was a truth she had already tested and proven.
Grandma Williams wasn’t just my grandmother. She was my mentor, my constant, my rock. She passed away in 1998, but her voice still echoes in my heart. Especially when life feels overwhelming.
There have been seasons in my life where I’ve been stressed to the max — trying to control outcomes, fix people, manage situations, and hold everything together at once. The more I tried to control, the more anxious I became. The tighter I held on, the less peace I felt.
And that’s when her words come back to me.
Be still.
Not scroll.
Not overthink.
Not strategize every possible outcome.
Be still.
Be Still and Know God is Working in Overwhelming Seasons
Sitting in silence isn’t easy. In fact, sometimes it’s uncomfortable. When everything around you feels uncertain and there doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel, silence can feel intimidating. But I’ve learned that silence isn’t empty.
Silence is where peace begins.
When I choose to sit quietly — no distractions, no noise — something shifts. My breathing slows. My thoughts settle. And in that stillness, I begin to sense something deeper. A reassurance. A clarity that doesn’t come from me.
I believe that’s where God speaks.
Not in chaos.
Not in frantic energy.
But in quiet confidence.
There have been moments when I couldn’t see what He was doing. When nothing made sense. When prayers felt unanswered. And yet, every single time I surrendered control and chose stillness, peace followed.
Not always answers.
Not always immediate change.
But peace.
And peace is powerful.
It’s the kind of peace that reminds you that even when you can’t see it, God is working behind the scenes. It’s the kind that allows you to let go — to truly “let God.” The Master of healing. The Counselor. The One who moves in ways we know are real, even when we can’t explain them.
Grandma was right. Stillness works. Silence creates space for faith to breathe.
And in that quiet space, I’ve found comfort more times than I can count.
If you’re in a season where everything feels loud and heavy, maybe this is your reminder too. Sit for a few minutes. Turn off the noise. Close your eyes. Breathe.
Be still.
You may not hear an audible voice. But you might feel something even stronger — a steady peace that reminds you that you are not alone and you are not carrying this by yourself.
So thankful for my Grandma, her wisdom still heals me.
Even now, I have to remind myself of this daily. Stillness isn’t something we master once and move on from. It’s a choice we come back to again and again, especially in the moments when life feels the most overwhelming.
Learning to be still has become part of my healing journey. It’s where I reconnect, where I release what I was never meant to carry, and where I’m reminded that I don’t have to have everything figured out. There is peace in surrender. There is strength in trusting God even when you don’t understand the process.
If you’ve been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of what’s next, I want you to know this: you don’t have to rush to find answers. You don’t have to force clarity. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause, breathe, and allow yourself to be still.
Because even in the silence, God is working. Even when you don’t see movement, He is moving. And even when your heart feels heavy, there is still peace available to you.
Be still long enough to feel it.
đź’ś Support for Your Healing Journey
Healing doesn’t always look like strength. Sometimes it looks like recognizing when you’re tired, when your heart feels heavy, or when you’ve been carrying more than you were meant to carry alone.
If you’re feeling emotionally exhausted, know that you’re not weak—you’re human. And in seasons like this, having a few supportive tools can make a meaningful difference as you begin to rest, reset, and reconnect with yourself.
Sometimes support looks like learning something new about what you’re experiencing. Sometimes it looks like being reminded that you’re not alone. And sometimes it’s simply creating small moments of calm in the middle of everything you’ve been holding together.
